Main & 7th Park, nestled in Mount Pleasant, Vancouver, is poised to be a dynamic urban park that transforms an underutilized asphalt parking lot into a vibrant and adaptable community space. This ambitious project is designed to be welcoming and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities, providing a variety of experiences through its sculpted edges and strong connections to the Main and 7th intersection.
The park's design is a harmonious blend of built forms, topography, and diverse plantings. It offers a range of spaces, from intimate areas to flexible open spaces for events and casual gatherings. Playful seating terraces and a canopy structure are strategically juxtaposed against rich plantings, including numerous trees, to create an inviting and dynamic environment that embraces seasonal change.
With a nearly three-meter elevation change on site, the design integrates various seating elements to encourage individuals or groups to linger and enjoy the park. These include custom benches with backrests, seating platforms, and movable furniture, all contributing to a lively and charismatic park experience. The rain garden along the west edge captures rainwater from the plaza and adjacent 7th Ave, significantly improving stormwater retention onsite and adding to the ecological value of the park.
Main & 7th Park is envisioned as a green landmark in its urban context, featuring lush layers of shrubs, perennials, and trees that contrast with the structured built elements. The design prioritizes native vegetation and sustainable materials, reflecting the park's commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being. As a new addition to Mount Pleasant, the park is set to be a beloved destination, offering a place to gather, relax, and engage with nature amidst the city's hustle and bustle.
Located at the gateway to Mount Pleasant, one of Vancouver’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, the park will reflect the needs of the growing area.
A canopy structure provides shade on a hot day and shelter during the rain, allowing park users to enjoy the space no matter the weather.
Richly planted mounds frame the park to soften noise from adjacent streets and provide natural soundproofing.
Everyday activity
Creative scultping of the terrain resolves the nearly three-metre elevation change across the small site. Rainwater is captured and filtered in a rain garden at the park’s low point.
