The existing Lions Gate Wastewater Treatment Plant opened in 1961. The plant has provided primary treatment for over 50 years, and is one of two remaining primary treatment plants in the region. The new plant is being designed to provide secondary level treatment or better, in accordance with new government regulations.
The architecture and engineering teams developed a diverse range of design ideas and concepts in the indicative design phase, which led to three build scenarios. One design was selected to define the scope of work for the subsequent Design and Construction Phase. Space2place undertook comprehensive site and context analysis, identified sustainable site opportunities, and worked with stakeholders to develop a vision for the plant so that it will be well-integrated within the neighbourhood. The plant is envisioned as a community asset that will benefit the local and regional municipalities, ratepayers, and the surrounding community.
Space2place is currently on a design-build competition team for the detailed design phase of the project.
